On June 4th – 8th 2010, my family visited Branson, MO & specifically www.SilverDollarCity.com.  I grew up attending Disneyland in CA & Silver Dollar City here in MO.  So off we went, my wife, my sweetpea & I to Branson& a visit with my family in the Ozarks.

As a reporter & member of the www.WDWNT.com Network, I went to report on the services available to those disabled, such as myself.  Before we left home, I was fortunate to speak with SDC PR Director Lisa. Lisa is a wonderful person,very enthused to meet me & allow me access to interview employess of the park.  If you have never visited, you SHOULD!  All the folk there are extremely friendly & helpful! In fact, you may be familiar with SDC, as it was on an episode of Undercover Boss on CBS. It was stated & shown that SDC has been voted one of the cleanest theme parks in America.

Lisa was kind enough to treat us to lunch & gave my family tickets to The Branson Belle Showboat, which is owned by Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation who also owns SDC.  The showboat is magnificent, serving a wonderful meal & stage show. On our trip to the Belle, they performed Broadway tunes, giving us a little Disney by performing songs from Mary Poppins & The Little Mermaid.  To access the showboat, I had to use a supplied manual wheelchair from the parking lot to the inside theater.  The staff was very kind in pushing the chair & nothing but polite & courteous!  During breaks, my wife & daughter were able to walk around the boat as it sailed around the Ozark area.

We spent two wonderful days at SDC. The park’s main theme is the 1880’s. You can visit artisans creating handmade baskets, soaps, leather goods, knives, etc.  My favorites are the working Blacksmith’s, Candy makers & Glass Blowers.  Also, for me, the central hub of the park is the Saloon Show.  This show is outstanding, with song, dance & plenty of comedy.  The players gleefully interact with the audience.  Another favorite is the Steam Locomotive, watch out when it’s robbed by 2 bubbling brothers! “You got any money, Honey?”

I had the privilege of speaking to a number of employess.  Charlie & Larry were dressed as prisoners to work at the Flooded Mine. In the bakery, Ed used to be a banker. Now he been baking luscious cinammon rolls & other assorted items for 11 yrs.  At the Reunion Hall, we had a wonderful lunch served by Rhonda, who’s been with SDC for 27 yrs!

If you are at SDC early in the morning, you can catch the raising of the Flag & walk around Main St where you will be able to visit many of the artisans working there.

Now about their services for the disabled, SDC provides wheelchair & scooter rentals.  You should call ahead and make a reservation.  Unfortunately, there is a very long walk from the Handicapped parking, thru the entrace gate to the immediate rental area.  Upon, leaving, you must return the rental & you have to walk thru a vast giftshop area to the handicapped parking.  You can switch from the scooter to a manual wheelchair to exit, Unfortunately on our trip an employee named Milt openly did not want to search for the larger wheelchair for me.  As soon as I sat in the regular chair, a wheel broke.  He then aqquisted to “digging” out the proper chair for me.  This was the only negative of the entire visit.

Overall, you must visit Branson, MO & www.Silverdollarcity.com! It’s beautiful, clean, friendly & has wonderful rides such as the Train, Flooded Mine, the indoor roller coaster Fire in the Hole, the Saloon & if you definately want to get wet, try the new Riverblast: Legendary pranksters, Tom & Huck, have found their way to Silver Dollar City and they’ve hatched a plan to take guests on the wettest, wildest river adventure these parts have ever seen! Riders and spectators will participate in this fun-soaked feud.  You get to shoot water cannons from your raft at spectators & they can shoot at you!

You want roller coasters? How about Fire in the Hole, Wildfire & Thunderation!

Need a little Disney feel? SDC also has The Grand Exposition!  Family rides include: 

The Elephant March (think Dumbo) & Royal Tea Party (Tea cup ride).
